Party with 4U!

Interviewed by: Johaubannah

Developer: 4U

When did you become a member here on IMVU?
Late 2006; I had a broken leg and was at home bored out of my brain recovering, so I clicked on a banner posted on my other favorite site, hsx.com, and ended up at IMVU. I downloaded it to see what it was and I think I was hooked from then on.
How much do you know about developing?
Developing is something you learn more about every day. I find it mentally challenging, but way too time-consuming.
When did you start developing?
Christmas 2006; I wanted to give all my IMVU buddies a special present and I sort of forced myself to learn so I could.

Is it easy to be a developer?
No, its not. IMVU helps us a lot, but it could be easier. It’s a rewarding process though, with many different levels of involvement.
What was the first item you developed?
A “Thank You” picture. :)
What is your latest product?
I just made a heap of blond hairs, called the “Pure Blond Invasion.”
As a developer, what inspires your kind of products?
Blond hair is a real challenge; it’s very hard to get right. IMVU is a like an extension of my mind: you can create and then walk through your creation! How cool is that?
Have you ever had a hard time understanding the steps on the IMVU previewer?
The previewer needs a lot more work on it from IMVU. In essence it’s amazing, but it needs to be simplified much more. I think they need a beginners’ version so anyone can make and submit a product in minutes.

In making items or products, do you think IMVU’s rules and regulations are fair?
The rules themselves are fair, but they need to be more clearly written and enforced.
Developing a product is not free, correct? Is it expensive to do the items?
That depends how you look at it: if you think of it like you’re getting an online business with a potential to make real money and a pool of waiting customers, I doubt there is anything cheaper! But you have to be prepared to throw some money at it (not a lot; maybe $100-200).
What is some advice that you can share with all the developers out there on IMVU?
The best clothing makers are commercial artists, and if they are not, they should be. So if you’re starting, or thinking about starting developing, forget all about clothes until you have the skills. Start with a beanbag or something simple. On my website ( imvumoney.com ) I sell a downloadable texture pack. You could start with something like that and make hair and other products all day of a reasonable quality. The idea would be to make enough so you start to get a good income. It still takes a lot of time.
